iPad 2 or Android Tablet?

The original Apple iPad has had a great first year. Although tablet pcs have been around for quite a few years, the sluggish and unfriendly performance offered never captured the publics' imagination to any great degree. Now, with the unimaginable success of smartphones over the years, it was time for the tablet to make a comeback. Apple have exploited the lack of competition in this end of the market to build a sizable advantage over the competition, mainly from Android. However, not to outdone by Apple, Google have moved swiftly to update their Os for tablets and help companies like Motorola and Samsung get their own tablets to the market quite quickly. But has the "rushed" launch of the Galaxy Tab hampered their momentum? The original Tab was released to the market using the smartphone version of Android and commentators felt this was a bad move, especially considering how well the iPad performed. However, with Honeycomb now being drip-fed onto the latest and most powerful Android tablets, the playing field has been levelled somewhat.

Tablet Android

With the iPad 2 featuring an updated dual-core processor, the Android tablets quickly followed suit with the Motorola Xoom and Galaxy Tab 10.1 featuring similar engines. These are widely considered the "Big 3" in the tablet world at the moment, RIM's playbook and other such tablets are not exactly garnishing the greatest reviews. All of the "Big 3" feature updated Os's, front and rear facing cameras and HD video recording. Both Android tablets have 1080p playback, whereas the iPad 2 only manages 720p. Many reviewers have commented on the fact that, despite having a slightly lower resolution, the iPad 2's screen just looks better. The two Android tablets are the clear winners when it comes to the cameras, with both featuring 2MP front facing and the Xoom having a 5MP rear, the Tab an 8MP. The ipad 2 can only manage a VGA front facing camera, with the rear rumored to be 3-5MP. Apple will undoubtedly address this shortcoming with their annual hardware update of the iPad, most likely due Spring/Summer 2012.

Tablet Android

Android 3.0 has now been fully optimised for tablets, although Googles frustrating policy of only making the latest versions available on select machines remains. This will not really affect the high-end Android tablet customers, but the lower end will have to make do with older builds. Widgets and full Flash support are now in place, Androids only real ammunition against the seemingly unstoppable iPad 2. This will no doubt make a sizable dent in Apples market share, but many (including myself), expect Apples domination in this market to continue for years to come. Recent figures released point to the iPad having 89% of worldwide and 97% of US traffic. Android has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years, taking a sizable chuck of the smartphone market. Non 'premium' smartphones are doing excellently for the Android brand, offering consumers a complete smartphone experience at a fraction of the price of a new iPhone 4 or Galaxy S2. Honeycomb and future Android updates will continue to improve their tablet experience also, offering a flexibility an Apple device will never have.

Apple, I feel, will continue to dominate the tablet sector for years to come. With the iPad and iPad 2, they have built a brand people want. Microsoft has had tablet PCs out for years and been unable to convince the public or even the vendors that they are the future. Apple has built a lifestyle tool in the iPad. A 'tablet pc' may sound daunting for casual users, an iPad is 'just a big iPhone', but the public love it. Now with iOS5 on the horizon coupled with the iCloud and iTunes Share services, the ease of use can only get better. Better multitasking, tabbed browsing, notifications and multi-touch gestures are some of the new features available for the iPad and iPad 2 this September. Unlike the latest versions of Android, these will be directly available for download to your device, no limitations. iTunes is the biggest music store in the world, the new features in iCloud and iTunes share will only increase this.

The winner here? Well both the iPad 2 and Android equivalents are all fantastic devices, similarly priced and when it comes down to it, really quite similar. Choice has never been better and buyers have a wealth of literature at their fingertips to help them choose. Apple will continue to dominate I suspect, however Google cannot be written off and will continue to steal the iPad's market share, albeit slower than they may like. So, the real winner here is you, the consumer. Choose wisely, and you wont be disappointed.

If you have been thinking about buying a tablet but did not know which one to buy this year may be the time to do it. There are some good tablets out at the moment but some potential game changers on the way. The current front runners are Apple's iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but the following tablets are certainly even more impressive in many ways.

The iPad is a great device but has several major drawbacks. Firstly you cannot multi task; it does not have a front camera and there are no USB ports. With these obvious weaknesses the iPad 2 is sure to be launched soon in order to compete with more functional competitors.

Expected features in the next version include front and rear cameras for FaceTime, which is Apple's version of video calling. Gamers will be pleased to hear a three axis gyroscope is expected to be used, which will allow for more interactive game controls. USB and micro SD ports are rumoured to be making an appearance this will make for better compatibility with other devices.

Also the next version is expected to be thinner, contain a more powerful processor and greater amount of memory, which will make the tablet faster and enable multi-taking. The iPad 2 is expected in spring of 2011 and long cues of Apple fans are guaranteed.

Motorola Xoom

The Motorola Xoom is the first tablet with a Dual-Core processor and the much anticipated Android 3.0 Honeycomb Google software. It features a 1GB internal RAM, multi tasking, front and rear cameras, a camcorder and Adobe Flash Player all on a 10.1 inch widescreen HD display. It can capture 720p Hi-def video and play it back via HDMI.

It also contains a Mini-HDMI and micro-USB port and a micro SD slot for better device compatibility and adding more memory storage. But according to some sources it will not be enabled until a future software update. The Motorola Xoom is expected to be launched in late February 2011.

BlackBerry PlayBook

The BlackBerry PlayBook's has some impressive specs and could be a real contender for the tablet throne. It runs a powerful 1GHz dual-core CPU with 1GB of RAM for ultra fast multi tasking. However, one thing which may count against the device is its 7 inch screen, which is much smaller than many of its competitors.

This tablet features a 3MP front-facing, a 5MP rear-facing camera with full HD 1080p LCD display which can output video via mini-HDMI. The tablet is set to be launched by the end of March in 2011 and will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions and provides a mini-USB port. This particular tablet only weighs 400g and is 0.4 inches thick.

It seems a whole host of new tablets are available or are becoming available throughout 2011. Making the right decision will mostly be down to personal taste, network tariffs and device price. Naturally the iPad 2 will gain the most attention, but there is always room for innovation and maybe a tablet will come out to dethrone the iPad in 2011.

Android Market Versus Apple App Store

There has been a lot of discussion lately about the differences between Apple's iPhone and phones based on Google's Android. While these discussions typically center on hardware, usability and the operating system, they rarely discuss the differences between the Android Market vs. the Apple App Store. There are a number of differences between the two, some of which primarily matter to end-users and others that matter primarily to developers.

Tablet Android

Open vs. Closed System. The single biggest difference between the Android Market and the Apple App Store is the difference between an open and a closed system. Apple's system is a closed one. Applications must be submitted to Apple for review and Apple ultimately decides what may or may not be sold in the Apple App Store. In contrast, Android Market is an open system. Developers can directly publish their applications to the market without having them filtered through a central authority. This means that the Android Market is likely to have a greater variety of applications and content but end-users have to accept that the applications are not being screened. There is a definite trade off. The Android Market does support a community rating and comments section, however, which helps buffer against poorly designed or malicious applications.

Tablet Android

Refunds. Another big difference between Android Market and the Apple App Store deals with paid applications. The former allows an end-user to obtain a refund by uninstalling the application within 24 hours of purchase. This makes it much safer as an end-user to purchase an application. If you buy an app that does not work properly or does not seem to meet your need, uninstall it within 24 hours and you get a full refund. The Apple App Store does not offer refunds on applications, so while the applications are screened by Apple, it is still buyer beware. You need to make sure an application will meet your needs before you purchase it.

Developer Initiation Fee. Another notable feature that distinguishes the two stores is how much it costs a developer to join. Android Market charges a fee of to sign up as a developer. This fee then allows you to publish your apps in the market. The Apple App Store charges to become a developer. Keep in mind that paying this fee does not mean your application will get added to the app store. Apple reviews all applications for acceptance so paying the fee does not guarantee that your app will be published. Both markets charge 30% of any paid application sales. Apple keeps this 30% while Google pays the 30% to the wireless carriers. This may result in greater cooperation from and adoption by wireless carriers for Android.

Competition. For a developer trying to get a new application noticed, there is less competition in Android Market. Currently Android Market hosts about 20,000 applications while the Apple app store has over 100,000 applications. There is a lot more room for new and innovative applications in the Android market.

There are a number of differences between the Android market vs. the Apple app store. Some of these differences matter more to developers and others to end-users. Being an open system and offering refunds to end-users makes the Android market a great asset for end-users. The openness ensures a greater variety of offerings and the ability to get a refund makes trying a paid application a low-risk venture. For developers, Android offers a lower cost to get started and an arena with much less competition in which to make your application stand out.
